Wrestling State Champion Alec Donovan Comes Out as Gay
Alec Donovan, a wrestling state champion from New Jersey, has come out as gay according to ‘Outsports’.
Donovan, who won the 145-pound title at the 2015 NJSIAA State Championships and has a 40-1 record, had only shared his sexuality with close friends and family until a recruiting trip to Limestone College in South Carolina put him in a position to reveal his secret.
“Rumor has it you’re bisexual. Is it true?” the recruit asked.
Donovan was honest and confident with his reply.
“The rumor isn’t true,” Donovan said. “I’m not bisexual… I’m gay.”
Donovan also revealed to ‘Outports’ the struggles of his journey to acceptance.
He considered suicide at one point. But with the help of his best friend, Haley, and the support from his teammates, Donovan was able to lift himself up and carry on.
Donovan said coming out publicly was a big relief.
“It felt like I was hiding something. It felt like a long-term game of hide and seek,” Donovan said.
Donovan will soon be competing as the first openly gay wrestler in the NCAA.
