Gay Swimmer Jack Thorne Wins Colorado State Title
Openly gay swimmer Jack Thorne at Thompson Valley High School in Loveland, Colorado, won his third consecutive state championship in the 100-yard backstroke over the weekend in record time of 48.30 seconds, making him the second swimmer from Loveland to win any event in three consecutive seasons.
“I’m really happy, it’s a great way to end my high school swimming career,” Thorne told OutSports. “I remember how I felt last year at this meet and this year was so much more relaxed and I was just able to have fun and see what I can do.”
The handsome 17-year-old athlete revealed he was gay last year by posting a message on Twitter and Facebook.
As for his proud mom, she says, “I honestly think that the people of his generation couldn’t care less [about his sexuality.] They pay attention to who he is, what kind of friend he is, what kind of athlete he is, how hard he works. I have not had any sense that the rest of it has mattered to them, and that’s the world I hope he’s going to live in. I hope he lives in a world where kids who are gay or lesbian never have to say who they are, because there are no assumptions made about who they are.”
We’re proud of you, Jack!
