High School Student Comes Out in His Yearbook in Style
It’s great that coming out has become commonplace these days. Now, an 18-year-old student, Maxwell Barrett, who recently graduated from Raritan High School in Hazlet, New Jersey, has officially come out to his parents in his yearbook… in style.
The quote said: “‘Of course I dress well, I didn’t spend all that time in the closet for nothing.’ -Unknown”
The teen was originally told by his school that his senior quote wouldn’t be published due to its “shock value,” but the young man’s parents, friends and even his teachers congratulated him for it.
Barrett revealed he was already “out” as gay to many of the people around him and, although he suspected they already knew, he had never officially told his parents.
“It was just more of a confirmation to my parents than a coming-out story,” Barrett said. “They said it was the best one in the yearbook and that they were proud of me.”
As for his motivations? Barrett says he simply “wanted to go out with a bang.”
He did a marvelous job of doing just that!
