Dear Sambag,

Mom found out I’m gay. She told me: “I’ll always love you, but Jehovah God will always come first… I don’t want you to hope we’ll support you if you choose this lifestyle.”

I was surprised by how numb I felt. I actually cried because I wasn’t having any intense feelings about what she said. I went to the gym to clear my head. Still feeling nothing. I should probably start looking for a roommate soon.

Nick

Dear Nick,

Do what you need to do to keep sane and happy. If you can maintain a good relationship with your mom then great, but you have to accept that may not always be possible.

This is how cults work. They set impossible standards and punish you for not meeting them. They make you think your own humanity is an enemy to be destroyed in the service of “god,” or more realistically the leadership of the cult – and it’s not her fault how she reacts to you because they made her like this.

But I’ll stop there and let our readers weigh in. Please share your advice in the Comments below.
